About John

Name:
John Johnson, probably something else in Sweden. Maybe Johan, Johannes, Jonas or Jon. The last name could have been one of these names with -sson after.

Born:
About 1864. According to his son: November 15, 1864. The 1900 U.S. Federal Census says that he was born in 1865 and was 34 years old when this was written in June 1900.

Place:
Sweden, don’t know exactly where. Some say the county of Halland.

Family in Sweden:

Since this first was written I have found out that John was the son of Jonas Jonasson Eldh and his wife Bengta Jönsdotter. John’s name in Sweden was Johannes Jonasson Eldh. He had three brothers, Carl, August and Jöns Peter. Jöns Peter had 11 children and two of them died when their house burned down. August went to America to but moved back and died in Sweden. Carl lived 1930 in White Plains, NYC. He had  seven children.  The man, Gust, that is buried in Lafayette Cemetery can be John’s wife’s brother who I know moved to them in California in 1901.

The text Before I found the family:

I don’t know much about them. Some say that John should have had four brothers and that he was the second-youngest. The father should have been a blacksmith . I have heard that the house his family lived in burned down. A Gust Johnson is mentioned in some documents. This should have been John’s brother. A man called Gus Johnson was buried in the Lafayette Cemetry in 1929.

Emigrated from Sweden:
According to the 1900 U.S Federal Census, John came to Pennsylvania, USA in August 1892.

Married:
November 19, 1898 in Oakland, California. You can see the marriage license here.

Dead:
October 3, 1907 in a tunnel which connects Contra Costa and Alameda Counties. The Oakland Tribune newspaper had an article October 4, 1907 about his being kicked to death by his horses. the Contra Costa Gazette had an article Oct 12 the same year about the same accident. My great grandmother, John’s daughter, told me that John was robbed and killed. If this is true they may have discovered this later on. She told me that those who killed him were arrested soon after and were sentenced to eight years in prison. Some say that they were hanged.
